Since its inception in December of 2004, the Children of Lake Atitlan program has accepted donations of over $130,000. Most of these donations have come through child and teacher sponsorships. These funds are used specifically for the academic program of the school. Additional donations have earmarked special projects at the school, such as building projects and nutrition programs.
ABOUT THE CHILDREN OF LAKE ATITLAN
The mission of the Children of Lake Atitlan program is to support the education of children in the
communities around Lake Atitlan, located in Southwest Guatemala. We seek to support the
children who are served by the program in their educational and physical development, and to
support the schools who provide educational and physical opportunities for these children.
We are currently working through the New Dawning Christian School, an elementary school
located in San Juan La Laguna, in the department of Solola. All of the children who are in the
program are students at the school.
Children of Lake Atitlan is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, and as such all donations are tax-deductable. All work is done on a volunteer basis, and only 5% of donations is used for administrative costs.
Donations received are used for the educational needs of the children. The cost of education for a student is about $20 a month at the Primary school level, and about $30 a month at the Middle school level. Students at the school pay tuition of $2.50 a month in primary school, and $5 a month in middle school. The remainder of the costs are covered by sponsor donations. Although sponsors are matched with one specific child, Donations, in effect, support all of the children in the school through support of salaries, supplies and programs. No money is given directly to the family of children in the program, although special gifts are accepted on behalf of sponsors.
